Yoga’s transformative effects are numerous – even with one class a week you can feel the effects immediately! Yoga means to unite, to bring to wholeness. It is a mind-/body practice you have to experience in your body in order to feel the difference it can make in your life. The physical practice of yoga, called hatha yoga, opens us up to the rich experience of the present. By bringing the body, mind, spirit and breath together in one place, a concentrated experience of our own wholeness is available in the NOW. Asana is the Sanskrit word for the pose or posture, the physical movement of Hatha Yoga. In the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, which were the first written compilation of yogic knowledge, asana is just a tiny thin slice of the much bigger “yoga.” The Sutras say that Sthira is the principle of steadiness, comfort, and stability. Sukham is discovering or creating a clean, transparent space inside, which automatically manifests in the form of joy and happiness and peace. This, in essence, is asana. Yoga is an energy management system … and asana practice helps to unblock or remove the obstacles to healthy and balanced energy flow. Asana practice neutralizes the effect of life on the body and with regular practice the body starts to function more efficiently – you feel lighter/steadier, your posture improves – how great is that – anti-aging for sure! A regular yoga practice… is an excellent vehicle for managing the flow of our energy and sustaining our health and feeling of well-being. It takes our energy back within so that we can renew and rejuvenate ourselves. The yoga poses offer so much; they are healing tools, means of energy management, as well as a path to self-discovery when combined with aspects of yoga other than the poses, such as pranayama and meditation, to name a few. This practice is also a therapeutic practice… for the average person - but even more so for the physically-challenged due to injury, disease, or other limiting conditions. Specific body alignment principles can be taken “off the mat” and into real life, benefiting your body as you sit, stand, drive and go about your daily activities. Your whole posture can transform as a result! If this is your first yoga class, congratulations for taking this first step towards a healthier, happier you!
